Graduate Certificate in Leadership

The Graduate Certificate in Leadership (GCL) provides an opportunity for students to consider the theory and practice of leadership as it applies to their own context. It develops skills required for effective leadership including self-awareness, communication, theological reflection and research.

ALC works in conjunction with the University of Divinity School of Professional Practice to deliver this award and is particularly involved in the delivery of leadership units for teachers in Lutheran schools and early childhood services.

Course outcomes

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Leadership

  • demonstrate specialised knowledge of leadership theories and frameworks including perspectives from Christian theological traditions
  • analyse and synthesise relevant information and concepts to inform leadership practice
  • communicate, both orally in writing, leadership ideas and decisions in logical, relevant ways.
  • develop capabilities to recognise, reflect on and respond appropriately to theological, social, cultural, ethical and sustainability issues from a leadership perspective
  • participate, contribute, and actively collaborate with other professionals to facilitate healthy organisational development and transformation.

The Graduate Certificate in Leadership is the equivalent of one full time semester (72 points). 

General Program

The Graduate Certificate in Leadership is generally delivered by the University of Divinity School of Professional Practice (SPP). It consists of three 12-point core units and 36 points of elective units.

Educational Leadership Program

For leaders and emerging leaders in a Lutheran School the Graduate Certificate in Leadership is a partnership between ALC and SPP. This program has 72 points of core units.

Additional short elective units, chosen from critical thinking and leadership formation, collaborative leadership, leading change, leading through challenges, confidence to lead, courage to lead, communication skills, balancing the budget, safeguarding, ethical leadership, managing conflict, building community and more.

Entry requirements

  • Successful completion of an undergraduate degree or an approved equivalent, or
  • a minimum of five years of relevant work experience or relevant professional attainment to a standard recognised by the Academic Board.
