Fritzsche Oration - Unearthing the Treasures
ALC Library was both the host and topic of the 10th Fritzsche Oration held on 17 September in partnership with the Lutheran Archives. Visitors gathered onsite and online to hear presentations from a panel comprising Dr Pam Zweck, Trevor Schaefer, and Professor Wendy Mayer.
Dr Pam Zweck led proceedings with an overview of the library’s history between 1975-1996, with reference to her own experience and to the work of Pastor Trevor Zweck, who can largely be credited with the professionalization of the then Löhe Memorial Library. Pam shared developments in technology, library networks, professional practice, and some of the names and faces that built the ALC Library.
Trevor Schaefer followed with a snapshot of chosen highlights from the rare book collection. Given time limitations, Trevor focused on the book of Concord, Luther pamphlets, and the 1561 Luther Bible held by the ALC Library. Trevor’s enthusiasm and expertise were clear and his explanation of the development of Luther’s writing and the imagery contained in the title pages of Luther’s original published pamphlets, were of interest to both old and new visitors to the library.
Professor Wendy Mayer finished the panel presentation with a brief overview of the areas of research the ALC Library has supported and its place within the University of Divinity and broader research community. Her overview finished with reflection on the importance physical libraries still hold in the digital age, sparking lively discussion over drinks and refreshment following the talks.
