A walk to remember: Saying farewell to ALC's historic campus
More than 600 visitors and walkers attended the ALWS Walk My Way event hosted by ALC on 3 May. As well as raising funds for a good cause, the event doubled as a public farewell to the North Adelaide campus, which the College will vacate at the end of June.
The community hub on the ‘sacred lawn’ was a hive of activity throughout the event, with live performances, stalls, and a variety of food on offer.
ALC staff and former students, doubling as tour guides, were kept busy with a constant stream of people wanting to look through historic Hebart Hall. As a result of people sharing their memories, several interesting details came to light on the day, including the fact that renowned author, Colin Thiele, had once occupied an upstairs bedroom in Hebart Hall.
Although the clock tower was not included in the tour, visitors were able to view a slide show incorporating footage of the workings of the clock and the many signatures left behind by those who had visited the clock tower over the past century.
The exhibition of historic memorabilia and photographs presented in both the former chapel space and the library proved popular with former students and staff, with many hoping to find themselves or a loved one captured in the various publications and images on display.
For those interested in obtaining a bargain or a piece of ‘Sem’ memorabilia, a visit to the garage sale in the former Refectory space was also a must.
Overall, the day provided an opportunity for those who have been connected with the campus over the years to visit, reminisce and say their final farewells.
Many thanks to ALWS for facilitating such a wonderful event and to Lutheran Archives for their assistance in compiling material for the historic display.
